WORLD LACROSSE WEBSITE REDESIGN

UX Design

PROJECT GOAL

Support World Lacrosse's mission of global participation by creating a better online user experience.

OVERVIEW

This project is part of an ongoing effort to redesign the World Lacrosse website. I started this project in February of 2022.

MY ROLE

As the sole UX designer on the Sport Development team, I first worked with the director of sport development to establish the goals and priorties of our redesign process. I then conducted user research and created the information architecture before designing wireframes and the final prototype.

OUTCOME

The new prototype increases task success rate by 70% and reduces time on task by 75%.

01. THE PROBLEM

CURRENT WEBSITE

The World Lacrosse website is difficult to navigate and is not a platform where fans or participants can learn more about the game.

GOALS FOR REDESIGN

Ensure resources and information are easily located and logically organized.

Measured by time-on-task.

Provide users with clear pathways to participation.

Measured by task-success-rate.

02. UNDERSTANDING THE USER

World Lacrosse's two user groups:
Member Countries and Potential Participants.

MEMBER COUNTRY NEEDS:

Members visit the website to access resources or information that is designed specifically for them. These users might be looking for an event registration page or grant information.

MEMBER COUNTRY PAIN POINTS:

Member-specific resources cannot be accessed from most primary navigation items and pages.

Resources are not organized in a logical way (discipline, gender, experience level, etc.)

It is difficult to navigate away from news and general information pages.

Password-protected (member-only) pages are not easily located.

PARTICIPANT NEEDS:

Individuals who are not directly affiliated with a member country are classified as potential participants. Participants might want to attend an event or enroll in an online course.

PARTICIPANT PAIN POINTS:

Users are unable to easily locate information detailing specific events or disciplines.

The site does not highlight how users can participate or play lacrosse.

Pages are not organized in a logical way.

Some pages are hidden within several layers of sub-pages and not accessible from all primary navigation items.

User interviews with both groups helped our team identify the shortcomings of the current website.

3.1 DESIGNING SOLUTIONS: ORGANIZATION

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

I got to work revising the information architecture of the website. We labeled pages as essential or redundant, consolidating information whenever possible and reorganizing most of the sub-pages.

CATEGORIZATION

Participant-facing pages were organized by participant type. Member-facing pages were grouped based on information type with a sub-section containing all educational resources.

3.2 DESIGNING SOLUTIONS: NAVIGATION

CURRENT CHALLENGES

With nine primary navigation items, users are frustrated by the current navigation system. Some primary navigation items bring users to a landing page while others open a list of sub-pages.

VISUALIZING SITE HIERARCHY

Our team identified four new primary navigation items. Each primary item would open a two-tier list of sub-pages. With fewer levels within the site hierarchy, this menu allows users to quickly scan and find any page.

INTUITIVE INTERACTION

The user interface of the new menu ensures that it becomes the user's primary focus when opened. As an overlay, users can visualize all the site's sub-pages without actually leaving their current screen. The white World Lacrosse net motif indicates what section is selected.

3.3 DESIGNING SOLUTIONS: PARTICIPATION ENGAGEMENT

CURRENT CHALLENGES

The existing World Lacrosse website offers resources for existing participants but does not provide a clear call to action for newcomers.

A CALL TO ACTION

I redesigned several participant-facing pages of the site to provide users with basic information and clear calls to action.

INVITING NEW PARTICIPANTS

The new sport development page features cards that provide users with a description of a discipline or participation group. This page allows users to view six potential pathways to participation on one page. In the past, this information was divided into five different sub-pages.

Making it easier for anyone to participate.

Call to action cards allow participants to quickly learn more about spectating, playing, or learning.

04. OUTCOME

This redesigned prototype makes it easier for members to find information while providing users with an opportunity to participate.

While the website redesign is an ongoing process, our team hopes to support the creation of a platform that will be a catalyst for the growth of the sport. This prototype reduces the user's time on task by 75% and increases the task success rate by 70%.
