PROJECT GOAL
Help users anticipate out-of-pocket costs when scheduling a doctor's appointment.
OVERVIEW
trueDoc was a 3-week product design exercise completed in 2022.
MY ROLE
As the sole designer, I conducted research, created wireframes and prototypes, and created the brand identity for trueDoc.
OUTCOME
85% of users stated they would rather use trueDoc than an existing scheduling platform.
01. THE PROBLEM
Scheduling platforms don't provide insight into how much patients will pay.
Popular scheduling platforms Zocdoc and Healthgrades allow users to browse by an insurance carrier but do not provide cost estimates.
For 85.7% of potential patients, cost is the most important factor when scheduling an appointment.
"Without price estimates, I can't really make an informed decision on a new doctor."
"My own provider portal did not have a way for me to view prices or schedule an appointment. I got so frustrated I did not schedule an appointment"
"I like that I can search and browse a lot of doctors on here (existing platforms), but I wish that I knew how much each one will cost."
Results from seven interviews I conducted with individuals who had recently attempted to schedule a doctor's appointment online.
02. USER NEEDS
What do users need to schedule a doctor's appointment with confidence?
1. Anticipate out-of-pocket costs.
2a.
Filtered browsing of doctors.
2b.
Quick and easy scheduling process.
While my research clearly pointed to the user's primary desire to understand the cost, I identified two additional needs. A useful product would meet all three of the user's needs.
Mapping the user's journey illustrated exactly what users would want from the product at each stage of the scheduling process.
03. DESIGNING SOLUTIONS
DISPLAYING COST
My initial sketches helped me visualize how cost estimates could be integrated with search and browse functions.

SEARCH AND BROWSE
1
This iteration of the search bar shows how users might filter results and enter their insurance information before searching.
2
Doctor cards provide an easy way for users to start browsing by category. While cards provide essential information like location and availability, they highlight cost estimates.
ACCURATE ESTIMATES
User testing revealed that rough cost estimates were not accurate enough to be helpful. This revised search bar and doctor cards encourage users input their insurance provider and plan before searching or browsing.
RELEVANT INFORMATION
Once users advance to the browse screen, a cost-estimator tool offers personalized estimates for the most common procedures based on a user's provider and plan.

05. REFINING THE USER EXPERIENCE
USER FLOW
Additional testing revealed that users who selected their insurance provider and plan first were more likely to schedule an appointment. From this insight, an ideal user flow took shape.
RETURNING USERS TO THE GOLDEN PATH
Text buttons serve as cues that encourage users to select their provider and plan before browsing. These visual cues are also placed throughout the user's journey to allow them to return to the "golden path" at any time.

FROM BROWSE TO BOOK
The final navigation shows how a user can schedule an appointment from the browse screen.

05. OUTCOME
IMPACT AND REFLECTION
I set out to create a platform that would provide users with a better way to schedule doctor appointments. TrueDoc does this by providing users with accurate cost estimates before they schedule.
85% of individuals that used trueDoc stated that they prefer it over existing scheduling platforms.
When solving a broad problem, narrowing the scope of my solution is crucial. I was reminded of this throughout this project. Some of my initial iterations did not reflect a commitment to addressing the user’s primary need. Returning to the barrier of cost, focused my design process. This helped me create what could be a useful, scalable solution.
